Around 7PM on January 1st, 2014, I was on a bus in the dark from Pasadena to the Spartan Marching Band hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Music from the victory celebration was still blasting over the bus speakers. Despite all the hoopla, I couldn’t help but just think for a moment how lucky I have been. My music, especially my participation in marching band, has taken me literally to each end of the country. I have had the opportunity to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of people live, and millions on television with the Spartan Marching Band, and even more when I was able to join the Macy’s Great American Marching Band.
I had an amazing time in California.
I met the SMB in LA directly from Maryland, and we started off with no delay. We practiced that evening and warded off bleariness from the time change. The next morning we were up early, practicing again, before heading off to parade through Disneyland. After playing for the crowds (filled with many Spartans!) we spent the rest of the day enjoying the parks. The weather was absolutely amazing the entire trip. Warm and not even a cloud in the sky! Then, more practice and off to bed quickly on New Year’s Eve.
My start to 2014 has to be my favorite of all my years so far. The Tournament of Roses Parade was amazing. It seemed to go on forever (all 5.5 miles of it), but it was utterly incredible. The Rose Bowl was everything I dreamed and more. The crowd was the loudest I have ever heard during pregame. Halftime was exhilarating. And the end…
24-20. Spartans win.
I hope to be back in Pasadena again with the Spartan Marching Band, but with the new BCS semi-finals, the future is uncertain. But no matter what, I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl, and I will go back, no matter if it’s one year or another twenty-six.
2014 is going to be great. I know it.
